What is BeWell?

BeWell is New Mexico’s Health Insurance Marketplace. “Marketplaces” are part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and are for people who can’t get health insurance from a job, Medicaid, or Medicare. This means people like small business owners, artists, gig workers, part-time workers, early retirees, and more can get affordable health insurance.

BeWell is a free, state-provided service for all New Mexicans. BeWell provides free health insurance evaluations, letting New Mexicans see their health insurance options. It is the only place where you can get financial assistance to help lower the cost of health insurance.

BeWell is Not...

  • BeWell is not the same as Medicare or Medicaid. Those are federal programs for specific populations.
  • BeWell is not a health insurance carrier. We do not provide or sell our own insurance. We are a marketplace where you can get free help assessing and purchasing plans through carriers like Presbyterian, Molina, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Healthcare.
  • BeWell is also not funded by tax-payers. Learn more about how we’re funded below.

How we're funded

BeWell is a state-created non-profit, but we do not get money from the state or from taxpayers. BeWell is funded by carrier assessments, which are annual fees we charge our insurance carriers. These assessments pay for 100% of BeWell’s operating costs each year.

All of BeWell’s services are free. We can help you find coverage, evaluate plans, and get signed up all at no cost to you.

While BeWell is funded by carriers, we do not show preference for any specific carrier. BeWell remains neutral and recommends plans based only on a customer’s needs and requirements. All of the plans offered on the BeWell marketplace are approved by the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance (OSI) and the New Mexico Healthcare Authority (HCA).
