Use Your State Tax Form for Easy Enrollment

The Easy Enrollment program allows you to check a box on your state income tax form to see if you qualify for low-cost or no-cost health insurance through Medicaid or BeWell. If you qualify, you can enroll immediately through a simplified process. Look for it when you complete your tax forms.

How Do I Get Financial Assistance?

Financial help paying for your health insurance comes in the form of premium tax credits that lower the cost of your monthly insurance payment
(called your “premium”).

The amount of your tax credit is based on the income estimate and household information you put on your BeWell application.

In addition, you may qualify for a no-cost or further reduced premium option through the New Mexico Premium Assistance Program if your household makes less than 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

The only way to get a premium tax credit is by enrolling with a health insurance plan through BeWell, New Mexico’s Health Insurance Marketplace.

If you need help understanding the financial help that is available, you can schedule an appointment with a certified BeWell assister.

Tax Credits, Programs and Additional Info

What Is an Advance Premium Tax Credit?

When you qualify for a premium tax credit, you can choose to use all, some or none of it in advance to lower the monthly cost of your premium. When you take your premium tax credit in advance, it is referred to as an advance premium tax credit (APTC).

Alternatively, you can choose to pay the full price of your premium each month and claim your premium tax credit when you file your taxes, which may result in you getting a refund.

Who Qualifies for a Premium Tax Credit?

The amount of your tax credit is based on the income estimate and household information you put on your BeWell application.

  • If your income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL) you will qualify for premium tax credits that lower your monthly premium for a BeWell health insurance plan.
  • If your Income is above 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL), you may qualify for premium tax credits that lower your monthly premium. To see if you do qualify, use our Anonymous Shopping Tool.

This table can help you understand if you qualify for premium tax credits. Tax credits are based on annual household income, which is an estimate of the yearly income for all household members.

Financial Assistance For Native Americans

The Native American Premium Assistance (NAPA) program provides enhanced premium assistance for Native Americans who are members of a federally recognized tribe. Specifically, NAPA provides:

  • No-cost premium options for individuals and families with incomes up to 300% FPL; and
  • Reduced premiums for individuals and families with incomes between 300-400% FPL.
Health Plans Levels and the Turquoise Plan

Health plans are grouped into levels on the Marketplace. These levels include Bronze, Silver, Platinum, Turquoise and Clear Cost.

Turquoise plans give you the most savings on out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. In order to qualify for some state-based financial assistance, you must choose one of the Turquoise plans. These plans are clearly identified by a Turquoise banner in the BeWell application.

The Inflation Reduction Act

You may be able to get more savings and lower costs on BeWell health insurance coverage due to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

Under the law:

  • More people than ever before qualify for help paying for health coverage, even those who weren’t eligible in the past.
  • Many people currently enrolled in a BeWell plan may qualify for more tax credits.
  • Your health insurance premiums after these new savings may go down.

The Inflation Reduction Act keeps these savings and lower costs in place through 2025. To find out if you qualify for extra savings, use our Anonymous Shopping Tool.
