Native Americans

BeWell is dedicated to connecting Native Americans in New Mexico to affordable, high-quality health insurance that helps complement Indian Health Services (IHS) and Tribal Health Care Center coverage.

If you are Native American and a member of a federally recognized Tribe, you may qualify for additional benefits when enrolling in a health insurance plan through BeWell, including:

  • Year-round enrollment: You can sign up for coverage at any time – no need to wait for the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
  • Lower out-of-pocket costs: You may be eligible for special Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) to help lower expenses like deductibles, copays, and premiums.
  • Continued care from trusted providers: You can keep seeing your current Indian Health Service (IHS) or Tribal Health Care Center doctors.

There’s no copayment, deductible or coinsurance at IHS or Tribal Health Care Centers. And you don’t need an IHS or Tribal Health Care Center referral to see an outside provider.

How BeWell Works with IHS

Having a health insurance plan through BeWell does not replace IHS or Tribal Health Care coverage. It supplements your IHS and Tribal Health Care Center coverage. Our plans pay for emergency care when you travel, and you can see providers outside the IHS and Tribal Health Care Center service area. Services include:

  • Emergency care
  • Hospital stays
  • Lab services
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Mental health and substance use disorder
  • Outpatient care
  • Rehab services and equipment
  • Prescriptions

We Help Your Local IHS Clinic

Getting additional insurance can also help your local IHS clinic! When insurance pays IHS or Tribal Health Care Centers for your medical visits, IHS and Tribal Health Care Centers can use that money to take care of your neighbors.
