Your 2027 New Mexico Health Insurance Open Enrollment Guide

If you need health insurance in 2027, now is the time to start checking your options. Your annual opportunity to sign up for a new plan is right around the corner. Open Enrollment is November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. During this period, eligible New Mexicans can sign up for coverage, renew a plan or choose a different one.

Already have a plan through BeWell? Open Enrollment is also the time to see what your coverage and costs will look like next year, as well as to explore the new plans available on the marketplace.

BeWell is New Mexico’s official health insurance marketplace. Our website helps New Mexicans compare health plans, check for savings and get free help with enrollment. Or, if you prefer to get help from one of our experts, you can schedule an in-person appointment, attend a virtual event or stop by our office throughout Open Enrollment.

Here is what you should know to prepare for this year’s Open Enrollment window:

Who Can Enroll for Coverage Through BeWell?

Health insurance plans available through BeWell are a great option for new or different health insurance coverage if you:

  • Live in New Mexico
  • Do not have health insurance through your job or a partner’s job
  • Are offered health insurance through your job that is “unaffordable,” or more than 10.22% of your annual income for 2027
  • Do not have health insurance through your parents if you’re under 26
  • Are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare
  • Are not currently incarcerated

This includes people who work for themselves, work jobs without health benefits, or people who expect their current health coverage to end.

Current BeWell customers should also review their plans. Your costs or coverage could change next year, and you may be able to find another BeWell plan that better suits your needs.

What Information Do I Need to Enroll with BeWell?

Gathering some key details ahead of time will make shopping and application for health coverage easier. You can browse and compare health plans without creating an account. The prices and savings shown while browsing are estimates. You need to complete an application to find out what plans and financial assistance you’re eligible to receive.

Information Needed to Compare Plans

Make a list of the following for you and everyone else in your household:

  • Doctors and other medical professionals who you see for care
  • Clinics, hospitals or other medical facilities where you regularly receive care
  • Prescriptions (including specific name and dose of each medicine)
  • Other medical devices or treatments you require.

You can use these details to check which plan will cover the health coverage you already know you need. If you can’t find some of that information or you aren’t sure about it, you can still get started and then ask BeWell for help finding out what you need.

Information Required to Apply for a Plan

Have these details ready when you log into BeWell’s application portal:

  • Names, dates of birth and contact information for you and anyone else in your household who needs insurance.
  • Social Security numbers for people applying who have them.
  • Immigration status, case number and other information, if it applies to you.
  • Information about current insurance and any job-based coverage offers.
  • Your best estimate of household income for 2027.
  • Recent pay stubs, tax information or self-employment records to help with that estimate.

If you already have BeWell coverage, keep your renewal notice nearby. You may also be asked for documents to confirm information on your application. For insurance applications, “household” means you, your spouse and people you claim as dependents on your taxes. It does not mean everyone at your address.

HealthCare.Gov provides more detail about complex households and exceptions. A BeWell certified assister can also help you figure out who to include and how those choices will affect your family’s overall costs.

How to Compare Plans and Check for Savings

Find Out What Financial Help May Be Available

Financial assistance, sometimes called subsidies, can lower what eligible people pay for insurance. Premium assistance can lower your monthly premium, which might mean you can afford a plan with lower costs when you get covered care. Your income, household size and other details affect what subsidies you may qualify for.

New Mexico uses state funds to support additional help paying for health insurance. State lawmakers and the Governor have supported that funding as federal assistance has changed, making New Mexico the only state where lost federal tax credits are still 100% covered. Check your financial help options before assuming coverage is out of reach.

Compare Your Monthly Payment and Care Costs

The plan with the lowest monthly premium may cost more when you need care. Check these details before choosing:

  • Premium: Your monthly insurance payment.
  • Deductible: What you pay for certain covered care before your plan starts paying for that care. Some services are covered before you meet the deductible.
  • Copay: A set amount you pay for a covered visit or medicine.
  • Coinsurance: A share of the cost you pay for covered care, such as 20%.
  • Network: The group of doctors and facilities that have an agreement with the insurance company.
  • Out-of-pocket limit: The most you pay in a year for covered care within your plan’s network. Premiums and services the plan does not cover are separate.

We use the terms Bronze, Silver, and Gold to describe how you and the plan share costs: you should not assume those words translate to “good”, “better” and “best”. You can also compare plan levels to explore Turquoise plans, which offer extra savings for eligible people, and Clear Cost plans, which use set costs for certain services to make comparison easier.

How Do I Complete My Enrollment through BeWell?

Once you have compared your options:

  1. Complete your application. Create an account if you are new to BeWell. If you already have an account, follow your renewal instructions.
  2. Finish enrollment. Choosing a plan is the first step. Follow the instructions in the portal to enroll.
  3. Read your notices. If BeWell asks for more information, submit it by the deadline in your notice.
  4. Confirm your coverage start date and first payment. If you owe a first premium, follow the payment instructions and pay on time so coverage can begin.

After enrolling, be sure to review your plan details. Watch for your insurance card and check with your insurance company if you have questions about future premium payments.

Open Enrollment FAQs

What if I Need Coverage Before or After Open Enrollment?

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This is a chance to sign up outside Open Enrollment because of certain life changes or other rules. For example, losing health coverage, getting married, or having a baby may qualify you. A BeWell Certified Assister can help you understand your options for getting coverage when you need it rather than waiting for the next Open Enrollment period.

Do Native Americans Have to Wait for Open Enrollment?

Members of federally recognized Tribes can enroll through BeWell year-round. A BeWell plan can work alongside Indian Health Service and Tribal health care. Explore coverage options for Native Americans or ask a Native American Certified Assister for help.

Can Immigrants and Noncitizens Apply for Coverage through BeWell?

Your options depend on your immigration status and other details. Some rules for federal financial help change in 2027, but some people who are no longer eligible for federal assistance may qualify for state assistance instead. Check current coverage options for immigrants and noncitizens and reach out to BeWell for help with your own situation.

Is Dental Insurance Included?

It varies from plan to plan. Check your health plan’s details. Adult dental coverage may require a separate dental plan. BeWell also offers standalone dental plans, and enrollment in those plans is currently available year-round.

Can People in My Family or Household Have Different Types of Coverage?

Yes. For example, some family members may qualify for Medicaid while others enroll through BeWell. An assister can help you check options for each person who needs insurance.
