“I work with our partners to get out there in the community so we can meet people where they are. It’s important. I’m very passionate about making sure all New Mexicans are insured,” said Lori Fierro, Outreach Operations Manager.

1. Free Enrollment Assistance

The BeWell outreach team and Certified Assisters provide you with free help so you can make the best decision for your coverage. A Certified Assister is trained to help you choose the best, most affordable health insurance plan. These BeWell team members can assist with:

  • Understanding income levels for cost-savings
  • How to report premium tax credits on your income taxes
  • Questions about what health services are covered by the plan you choose

Certified Assisters help is free. They are here to answer questions and help you understand your health insurance plan. Stop by one of our community events to get assistance and answers to your questions—no appointment needed!

2. Navigate Life Changes

Generally, there is a short time each year in which people can sign up for health insurance. This is called open enrollment. But there are exceptions.

Native Americans can enroll year-round. Others can enroll after a big life change, during a special enrollment period (SEP). Some of these include:

  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having a baby or adopting a child
  • Losing your job-sponsored health coverage
  • Losing your Medicaid coverage
  • Moving to or within New Mexico

If you qualify for a SEP, you usually have 60 days to confirm the qualifying life event and enroll in new coverage. BeWell team members can discuss these changes with you to help you get coverage and avoid a gap in your health care.

3. Plan Updates for Native Americans

If you are Native American, you don’t have to wait for open enrollment. Native Americans can enroll in health coverage or make changes to their plan through BeWell at any time during the year.

“Our Native American Outreach Coordinator, Charlotte, is amazing,” Fierro said. “She goes to all the chapter houses, she is out in the community speaking and doing presentations. She’s really out there connecting and listening and finding out what people’s needs are.”

By signing up for a plan through BeWell, you can get:

  • Access to a larger network of doctors
  • More coverage for specialty care
  • Easier access to prescriptions

BeWell plans complement the coverage offered by Indian Health Service (IHS) and Tribal Health Care Centers. When insurance pays for your doctor visits, IHS and Tribal Health Care Centers use that money to take care of your neighbors. Win-win!

4. Understand Health Insurance Paperwork

There can be a lot of paperwork involved with enrolling in or changing your health insurance plan. BeWell experts can help you understand how to fill out the forms and what unfamiliar terms mean.

If you’re ready to apply for insurance, bring these items when you visit us to get the best coverage and cost-savings options:

  • Social Security numbers for everyone in your household
  • Information about your household income (such as pay stubs)
  • Details about any health coverage you already have and
  • Copy of your recently filed taxes
  • Lists of your current doctors and dentists, including their specialties and locations
  • Information about any job-based insurance that’s available to you

Fierro noted that BeWell staff take your privacy seriously.

“At any event we do, there’s a private space and we’ve very vigilant about privacy,” she said.
