If you have a disability, you may be able to get access to various health insurance options including Medicaid, Medicare or a health insurance plan through BeWell.
If you do not have health insurance and you are waiting for a disability status decision, BeWell can help.
You can apply for coverage through BeWell while you wait for a disability status decision from your local Social Security Administration office. When you apply, you will find out whether you qualify for Medicaid or for financial assistance through BeWell to help lower the cost of insurance.
Depending on your household size and income, you may qualify for Advance Premium Tax Credits (APTC) to help pay for your monthly health insurance premiums, when you take it in advance.
Keep these things in mind:
- If your application for disability is denied, you can still apply for health insurance through BeWell.
- While filling out your BeWell application you can select the household member applying for coverage and report if they have a disability. BeWell will send your application to the New Mexico Health Care Authority to see if you qualify for Medicaid.
- Insurers offering coverage through BeWell cannot deny coverage or charge you more based on your answers to questions about your disability or for having a pre-existing condition. If you have a disability, you are entitled to no annual or lifetime coverage limits with health insurance through BeWell.
