Can You Get Health Insurance on an F1 Visa? Answers to FAQs

If you have an F1 visa, you’re probably already navigating a complex mix of classes, grades and campus maps in your new environment.

Life as a student can be overwhelming—but finding health insurance doesn’t have to be! You might qualify for a quality, affordable health insurance plan through BeWell, New Mexico’s Health Insurance Marketplace.

Let’s dive into what you need to know.

Who Qualifies for Health Insurance Through BeWell?

To qualify for insurance through BeWell, you must:

  • Be a New Mexico resident.
  • Have no access to employer-sponsored coverage, Medicaid or Medicare.
  • Be lawful present, which means you have a valid Social Security number, F1 Visa or other immigration documentation.

When Can You Apply for a Plan Through BeWell?

Every year, New Mexico residents can apply for a health insurance plan through BeWell during Open Enrollment, which is from November 1 to January 15. But don’t worry! If you are looking for insurance another time of the year, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

You may qualify for an SEP if you:

  • Gain U.S. citizenship.
  • Have income changes. You can enroll any time if you have income less than twice the federal poverty level and you are not eligible for Medicaid.
  • Go through a major life event, such as having a baby or getting married.
  • Lose COBRA coverage, Medicaid coverage or health insurance from a job

What Will My Insurance Cost?

Plans offered through BeWell have a range of cost and coverage. Plans are sorted into three tiers of bronze, silver and gold

  • Bronze tier plans are the most affordable and cover less of the cost of care.
  • Gold tier plans cost more and cover more.
  • Silver tier plans are in the middle for price and coverage.

The good news is that all plans available through BeWell cover 10 essential health benefits, including emergency services, preventive care and laboratory services. You can also potentially lower your monthly premium with advanced tax credits

Where Can I Get Care?

Where you can get care depends on the insurance plan you select. Contact your school’s student health services to find out which health insurance plans they accept.
