Farmers’ Markets in New Mexico: Fresh Food, Local Flavor, and Healthy Summer Habits

New Mexicans love to be outdoors all summer long, so why not move your grocery shopping outdoors, too?

The opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air while you shop is just one of the many things to appreciate about New Mexico’s farmers’ markets.

You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, support local growers, and bring home new ingredients and recipes for your family to try. Many markets also include prepared foods, live music, art, or family activities.

Here are a few more great reasons to shop at your local farmers’ market, plus a few tips to help you get started.

How to Shop at Farmers’ Markets on a Budget

Farmers markets don’t have to be an expensive treat. With a little planning, they can become an affordable part of your normal food routine.

Ask About Ways to Pay

Many farmers’ markets accept cash, debit cards, and tap-to-pay. Some also accept payment from supplemental nutrition programs, such as:

Rules can vary by location. Some benefits may only work with certain vendors or foods. When you’re ready to shop, ask basic questions at the market’s information booth:

  • “Do you accept SNAP?”
  • “Do you offer Double Up Food Bucks?”
  • “Are there any deals or discounts today?”

The market’s website, social media page, or information booth are all places where you can check for special promotions, deals, or opportunities for flexible pricing specific to that market.

Make a Shopping List

It is easier to spend too much if you shop without a plan. A short list can help. Try this simple list for your first visit:

  • One fruit for snacks
  • Two vegetables for dinner
  • One ingredient for lunch
  • One item your family already likes
  • One new item to try

You can also set a small budget before you go. For example, you might decide to spend $25 on produce for two or three meals. This is another area where farmers and market employees will often be happy to help you brainstorm the best options to make your dollar go further.

Try Something New

Some farmers’ market stands provide printed recipes. And the growers are often able to give you plenty of meal ideas if you strike up a conversation.

But you don’t have to cook something new every night to get nutritional benefits from fresh produce. Start with foods your family already likes. Then add one new fruit or vegetable at a time. You might try:

  • Tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn in a summer salad
  • Squash, onions, and chiles for calabacitas
  • Melon or peaches for a sweet treat
  • Fresh herbs to add to beans, eggs, soups, or grilled vegetables
  • Lettuce, carrots, or radishes paired with dips

Using fresh produce doesn’t have to require more prep time. Fruits and vegetables can provide easy meals, too. Fresh, seasonal ingredients can turn into a nutritious dinner or a quick snack to pack for lunch at work or a day of adventure.

Where to Find Farmers’ Markets in New Mexico

Farmers’ markets are not only in big cities like Albuquerque or Santa Fe. New Mexico has markets in many parts of the state, including smaller towns and rural communities. To find a market near you, start with the New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association’s statewide farmers’ market directory.

Before you leave home, use the farmers’ market directory or the market’s website or social media to check the market’s:

  • Dates and hours
  • Location
  • Parking
  • Payment options
  • Accepted food benefits
  • Weather updates
  • Whether pets are allowed

Market details can change during the season. Checking ahead can save you time, gas, and frustration. And don’t forget about flea markets! BeWell has a monthly table at the Gallup Flea Market each month. See where we’ll be.
