Dr. Mark Epstein, MD, MBA
Dr. Epstein is a results-oriented healthcare executive and physician leader with deep experience in managed care, health plan strategy and operations, healthcare finance, and delivery system and medical group operations. In January 2020 he became CEO and President of True Health New Mexico. In January 2019, he became the President. Prior to his promotion, Dr. Epstein served as Chief Medical Officer of True Health New Mexico and led the Medical Management Division, which consists of utilization management, case management, disease management, population health management, and quality programs. As CEO and President, he is responsible for statewide health plan operations and performance. With the other members of the Senior Leadership Team, Dr. Epstein drives strategy to grow health plan enrollment and expand into new markets.
Prior to joining True Health New Mexico and New Mexico Health Connections, Dr. Epstein served at Presbyterian Healthcare Services as Medical Director of the Adult Medical Specialty Service Line, as Associate Medical Director for Specialty Care for Presbyterian Medical Group (PMG), and as Medical Director of PMG Urgent Care Clinics. He has also served as Medical Director of Emergency Services at Lovelace Health System.
During the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Dr. Epstein was integral to establishing New Mexico’s only consumer oriented and operated plan (CO-OP). The CO-OP leveraged innovative medical management strategies to offer affordable health insurance options both on and off beWellnm The New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange to individuals, families, and small businesses. Understanding that physical and behavioral health are inextricably linked, Dr. Epstein directed the development of health insurance options that prioritize eliminating barriers to care and helping members achieve their best possible health status.
A board-certified emergency physician, Dr. Epstein earned his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree in human biology from Stanford University. He also earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee in 2007, where he was named “Outstanding Physician Leader.”
He also currently serves as a Board Trustee of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, as a Board member of NTxBio, a Santa Fe based biotech start-up, and as an Advisor to Twistle, an Albuquerque and Seattle based health IT firm.
